Homecoming (Fantasy, 100 words)

“Step.”

Burlap scratches my face as I step tentatively on the stone floor. Dank air seeps through tiny holes, welcoming me to a home I never knew. I laugh, and my captor’s grip tightens.

“Step.”

I was to be king of this great city, so I heard from my earliest days. Now I have come at last, not to take a throne, but to inhabit a cell.

“Step.”

He takes the burlap from my head. Recognition flashes in his intelligent eyes as he turns the key to lock my cell.

“Wait, king,” he whispers. “We have not all been purchased.”

  1. Your repetition of “step” intensifies the dramatic mood of your story which is somewhat relieved by the possible reprieve suggested in your final sentence. Very nice.

  2. Dear Lisa,

You left me wanting to know more about this king/slave. Ominous and hopeful at the same time. I’ll say it, too. I loved the way you used “step” to give us the feeling of being blindly led down the road to the cell. Good job.

    shalom,

    Rochelle

  3. Hi. It has been so long since I have read one of your stories, much less written one of my own. I would keep thinking “I’ll go back and read all of Lisa’s stories when I can”, because sometimes they follow others. I couldn’t resist, and this is a good one. Simple storytelling at it’s best, because it continues in my mind. Hopefully I am back writing and reading for awhile.
