The View from the Top (Fantasy, 99 words)

“Race you.”

She’s off again, always trying to outdo the world. She bolts up the amphitheater steps, and I’ve no choice but to follow. It’s how we’ve always worked.

I’m almost to the top, but one glance at my aching legs, and she’s disappeared. I look left, right, behind, and – Oh, please, no! – down. She’s nowhere in sight, but I hear her laughing, somewhere above and ahead of me.

All her talk of unseen possibilities must be getting to me.

I step up and onto rock-hard air.

“Hurry, slowpoke,” she says. “The view from the top is unreal.”

  1. Dear Lisa,

This story is full of subtleties disguised by our constant immersion in the ‘normal’ world. i love how you gradually led us up and out into another world, rife with possibilities. Well done.
