The Prostitute and The Promise
“Seems a pity to tear it all down.”
“We have our orders.”
“Hold it. What’s that?”
I followed Adam’s gaze and saw her scarlet dress, the one she’d worn the day she saved my life, fluttering from the fire escape, as if hung out to dry. A smile spread over my face, a dim reflection of the joy surging in my heart.
“She’s alive!” I said, slapping Adam’s shoulder. “Rae and her father and mother and all her family. We may spare them, Adam. For her kindness, we may spare their lives!”
Visions of Rae carried me to her window.

Lovely modern twist on a well known story!
Thank you!
I like the promise of this story. Feels like there’s a bigger tale here, though.
Loosely based off the Old Testament story of Rahab, who protected Israelite spies and secured safety for her family by hanging a red cord from her window. She winds up somewhere in the lineage of Jesus Christ. Oh, and she was a prostitute…
I like your modern version and I recognized your source story. Good job!

Oh my knowledge of stories from the bible is lacking. Love this story anyway though
I read it twice knowing I was missing something…then it hit me 🙂 Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. Wonderful take on the prompt – just wonderful!
I could figure this one out until I realized how the title fit with “Rae”. Then the scarlet dress and everything else fit into place. Nice job. 🙂
A very thoughtfully crafted piece. Well done.
Rahab! I didn’t understand until I read the others comments. Great take indeed!
Thank you!
Thanks for the explanation of the parallel story. I felt like ti seemed familiar, but could not draw the parallel.
Dear Lisa,
I see others beat me to the punch in their comments. Loved Rae-hab. 😉 One of my favorite stories. You translated it well into a modern day Jericho.
shalom,
Rochelle
Oh, thank you, Rochelle! 🙂
Brought a smile.
Glad to hear it!
Great source for your story- interesting flash.
