I’m in the midst of mad revisions to a manuscript, so I may not be around much, but here’s this week’s offering, compliments of Penn… Hope everyone is doing well!

The House of Several Genres
Second story’s haunted. Basement swarms with evil. Stay off the top floor, too. You’re not old enough for what goes on up there.
A mad, time-traveler settled in on the fourth floor with all his gadgets and wizardry… No, the wizardry’s all on the third floor. Dragons and scrolls, too. Stay on the right side of things if you want a happy ending on either of those levels.
Now, if all you want is a handsome hero, stick to the ground floor.
Whatever you do, be sure to come back out now and then. That’s where the real stories are.

Now for a little fun: Please pick a floor for me to visit next week. For several reasons, I will decline any requests to write on the top floor, but the rest is fair game. I’m afraid I have little creativity to spare until my revisions are complete, but if you’ll give me a genre to use with next week’s prompt, we’ll see what fun we can have!

I vote for the second floor! I enjoyed this, and interactive too! 🙂
Thanks! I’m tallying the votes! I thought it would be fun (and a good exercise) to be limited to a predetermined genre next week. 🙂
I would have to vote for the ground floor 🙂
We shall see… 🙂
I gotta go with the basement. “Swarms with evil” sounds quite exciting. This place sounds like the fairy tale version of Hotel California.
That song gives me the creeps. I make my husband to turn it off whenever it comes on the radio. Shudder.
Basement’s for me! Sans any mention of the Eagles please =)
Ah now! Now that’s what I call a full house!! Wonderful! 😀
Thanks!
Sounds like a fun “House of Horrors”…Reminds me of the Chelsea Hotel in NYC…from the ’30’s through the druggie hippie days. Each floor had it’s own story.
You know me… got to be the basement. Nice idea!
Show us the basement, please!
What a fantastic idea this is – love the last bit too – I wonder how many writers forget there’s a real world out there with real stories to experience!
Definitely the basement. I know you can do it… evil evil 🙂
So far, there is overwhelming support for the basement, solidifying my idea that the Friday Fictioneers are a dark and sinister crew. 😉
Is that surprising?
Not really. I’m just afraid I won’t be able to scare you all. I’ll have to dig deep to find something truly awful. 😉
“Seventh floor, ladies lingerie.” Something different on each floor. What a fun place! A fun story.
Yeah, I’m staying off that floor! 😉
Very creative!
I would like you focussing on the ground floor very much! 🙂
Good luck with the revisions.
I might just have to do a double header next week. Maybe… 😉
I think any of them will be enjoyable so I’ll wait and see where it goes. All the best with the manuscript!
janet
Thanks. It’s coming along decently… I have had to rewrite a huge portion of the original manuscript, but it’s for the best and not as dreadful as I would have thought! 🙂
How fun! I love your take on this building. You really added depth and layers to it I hadn’t imagined before. I gotta know more! Is there a secret floor? One that the average traveler isn’t told about at all, but might occasionally happen upon?
There is a secret floor, apparently… A sub-basement full of mythological retellings. 😉
I second Janet …. 🙂 surprise us !? 🙂
I think from the look of responses we’re going to be in the basement next week. You know we do love our dungeons.
Yes, I think we will have a little taste of horror next week!
basement here… do they have a sub basement too ?
Good grief! What would they keep in the sub-basement?!?!
a story ?
Well, duh… 😉
perhaps it was built over the ruins of an ancient temple – and the sub-basement opens to it ???? 🙂
Oh, but I love this idea… I was thinking earlier today that I didn’t leave any room for mythological retellings. I guess you have discovered the house’s secret level!
so many questions — can’t wait to see what you discover in your excavations — be safe 🙂
Surprisingly I long for the ground floor.
I’ve had a few votes for the ground floor… thinking I might make it a double header next week, just because.
Dear Lisa,
I love your title. Pretty much says it all. I, too, am in the midst of rewriting a manuscript so I know from whence you write.
shalom,
Rochelle
What are you working on? (And whatever it is, best wishes as you revise!)
Very creative. 🙂 It’s nice to have a place for everyone, unless the horror and murder mystery floors decide to kill each other. So, do the cross-over genres have to meet in the stairwell?
I suppose they would meet there…
Really enjoyed this. I can’t decide which floor I’d like to hear more about – there must be so much to learn from each of them. Looking forward to more from any of them. And good luck with all your editing.
Thanks!
Let’s see what you can do with the ground floor… not the one I think you would pick. Your story was a perfect explanation for this building. I bet you are getting tired of me telling you how clever you are, right Lisa?
Oh, no – I never tire of being told how clever I am. Everyday “duh” moments more than make up for a clever story now and then! 😉
Seriously, though, the ground floor isn’t the first one I’d pick, which makes it an excellent one to try. At this point, I think the basement is in the lead, with ground floor in second. Looking at doing two next week. We shall see.
Haha, top floor’s off limits? Yarr! Well how about the left side of the third floor? That sounds like it could be interesting.
Loved the story by the way, especially your last line about where all the real stories are. Great!
Oooh, the left side of the third floor. That would make in interesting tale!
I like the idea. I have tried to get people to vote before and did not get much response. Obviously your experience is much better!
What an interesting interpretation of the photo prompt
Oh bother! My curser was on “post comment” when I hit enter. Continuing on….
…photo prompt. I’v certainly like to know what is happening on some of those floors – especially third, fourth and ground floors 🙂
Thank you, Lyn. The next post (https://waitingforaname.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/friday-fictioneers-double-header/) gives you a picture of the basement and first floor. Glad you’ve enjoyed these! 🙂
